Among the irregularly shaped shells many other marine species can live. Vlieland, 14 July 2007. Photo Roy Kleukers.

The Japanese oyster is a bivalve which has been introduced into Europe for consumption. It was erronously thought that the species could not reproduce in Dutch waters. After introduction it has invaded many parts of the North Sea coast and Wadden Sea. The shell mass covers large areas and the mollucs have a great filter potential, therefore having a big impact the Dutch marine ecosystems. The sharp shell edges are dangerous for scuba divers. On the positive side the irregular shells provide an interesting new substrate for sealife.
