Invasiviteit (toelichting) |
Ficopomatus enigmaticus is an invasive species that is found in brackish waters where the calcareous tubes of this worm can form reefs up to 20-30 cm high. It is assumed that it has been distributed throughout Europe by hull fouling and ballast water.

Ecologische impact (toelichting) |
Colonies of F. enigmaticus forms additional hard substrate and increases the surface area of the substrate to which it is attached; this is beneficial for many organisms as Polychaetes and crabs as it offers shelter and new food sources. Presence of F. enigmaticus increases biodiversity.
The calcareous tubes of this worm form a reef that forms a (for Europe) unique ecosystem on itself. By forming these reefs this species can have a significant impact on the native species and the local ecosystem. |

Economische impact (toelichting) |
Can clog pipes of for example cooling water systems.
