Recentelijk is voor het eerst een betrouwbare fylogenetische boom van het platwormgenus Schmidtea gemaakt. Met behulp van DNA-studies werden de vier bekende soorten uit het West-Palaearctische gebied onderscheiden. Daarbij werd ook duidelijk hoe Schmidtea nova onderscheiden moet worden. De soort blijkt ook in Nederland voor te komen.
