Invasiviteit Niet invasief
Invasiviteit (toelichting) The species has become widely distributed in the United Kingdom after its introduction to English canals around 1850 showing that it is well capable of dispersal after it becomes introduced (Gittenberger et al. 1998). Nontheless there are still only only few records from the Netherlands and there is no indications of a rapid increase in distribution. For unknown reasons the species has become rare in the United Kingdom after 1900. M. transversum is known from a range of habitat types, is able to adapt to polluted environments, can occur in very high densities (over 100,000 individuals per square meter in the Missisippi River). These densities are however not reached in Europe. In France the maximum recorded density is 100 individuals per square meter (Mouthon & Loiseau 2000).
