Indeling

Charadriidae [familie]
Vanellus [genus] (7/1)
vanellus [soort]

Only small gaps in distribution, coinciding with extensive woodland or urban areas. Highest densities are recorded in the lower parts of the country, especially in damp pastures. Besides, surprisingly well-distributed over the higher grounds, where 40-80% of the birds nest on arable land (green maize). However, monitoring data indicate a decrease in the east and south since the mid-1980s, probably caused by lower reproduction, which is affected by habitat loss and increased agricultural pressure. Trends in core areas are also negative, although camouflaged by a bias in census plots. Some 200,000-300,000 bp in 1998-2000.
