The occurrence is difficult to assess when no special attention is paid to breeding behaviour. As insufficient fieldwork might attribute for some distributional gaps, a comparison with older data is rather precarious. Major concentrations were recorded in extensive forests and coastal dunes. The species avoids the poorest soils and has an unexplained low presence in some extensive (suitable) woodlands in the southeast (Limburg). Trends since the 1970s vary and are sometimes contradictory, declines being reported from the Veluwe area and coastal dunes, whereas numbers increased in the newly reclaimed polders of Flevoland. The breeding population in 1998-2000 is estimated at 2000-3000 bp.
