Rare but annually recorded species in The Netherlands since 1973, with on average 3-4 birds/year. Small influx in 1998 (about 30 birds) coincided with the first breeding record, in Noordwest-Overijssel. A pair bred amongst Great Cormorants and Grey Herons, but the breeding attempt failed at the nestling stage. Intriguing observations were made at two other localities, consisting of a pair staying for a prolonged period in a colony of Eurasian Spoonbill followed by an undocumented claim of juveniles, and a bird seen flying with nest material. No indications for breeding in other years.
