Highest densities in mixed farm- and woodland. Numbers in large woodlands on sandy soil have dropped by as much as 90% in the last two decades; these former strongholds held on average 70 bp/100 ha in the 1970s. This decline was mainly caused by changing farming practices, especially a switch from cereal growing to green maize (drastic decline of food supply in breeding season). The steep decline in woodland in the e and s Netherlands was not fully compensated by the colonisation of, and increase in urban habitats. Breeding popuĀlation in 1998-2000 is estimated at 400,000-500,000 bp (500,000-800,000 in 1979-85).
