Indeling

Falconidae [familie]
Falco [genus] (10/3)

More widely distributed than Common Buzzard, but less numerous. Gaps in its distribution correspond with large forests (where the species disappeared due to predation by Northern Goshawk) and open farmland (except for areas where nestboxes are supplied). Since the 1970s, a marked range expansion was recorded in the southwest Netherlands, where increasing corvid populations provided nest sites. The population in 1998-2000 is estimated at 5000-7500 bp, showing marked year-to-year fluctuations partly caused by cyclic abundance of voles.
