Accipitridae [familie]
Circus [genus] (4/3)

More than 95% of the Dutch breeding population (1300-1450 bp in 1998-2000) nests in the northwest half of the country, in marshland and also in crops in arable land (Groningen, Friesland). Breeding elsewhere is scarce because of a lack of undisturbed nesting sites and low food availability. The breeding range expansion since 1973-77 is part of a recovery since the pesticide era (only 100 bp in late 1960s, 725-850 in late 1970s), but includes the occupation of new areas or habitats as well. Some regional decreases in the 1990s are related to habitat deterioration and predation by red foxes, but an ongoing increase is obvious in other regions.
