The most widely distributed breeding bird in The Netherlands (98% of all squares occupied). Densities in mixed farmland are generally high. In very open farmland, especially arable land, and in urban habitat, densities are lower. Population development since the 1970s is slightly positive in farmland (due to increased infrastructure, farm buildings and perhaps food supplies), but negative in coastal dunes (changes in vegetation, caused by atmospheric deposition of nutrients). Population in 1998-2000 is estimated at 70,000-140,000 bp.
