Graspieper Anthus pratensis

Foto: Wijnand van Buuren

Motacillidae [familie]
Anthus [genus] (9/3)
pratensis [soort]

Occurring in a wide range of habitats and widespread. However, high densities are only recorded in the north and southwest, in open areas with a large proportion of arable land. Less abundant in the river district and in open heaths and moors. A retraction of the breeding range in the east and south of the country coincided with a population decline here. Grassland has lost its status as favoured habitat as breeding opportunities here are presently confined to edges of ditches and dikes. Densities in arable land tend to decline as well, but heaths and coastal habitats like saltmarshes have experienced local increases. Some 70,000-80,000 bp in 1998-2000.
