Remarkably abundant, especially in the lowlands. High densities are mainly confined to large wetlands, although peat moors and marshes in the southeast and east of the country may also hold noticeable numbers. The species frequents arable land as well, especially in Groningen, Friesland and Flevoland (mainly along ditches and small canals). Deceasing trends until the 1960s were followed by a strong recovery and increase. Large areas became colonised, initially around core areas (Biesbosch, Oostvaardersplassen), but recently distribution has expanded even into arable land. Some 9000-11,000 bp in 1998-2000 (900 in 1975).
