Foto: Hans van der Meulen

Paridae [familie]
Cyanistes [genus] (2/1)
caeruleus [soort]

Except for some coastal areas, widely distributed and especially abundant in wooded areas in the east, southeast and centre of the country. Prefers old deciduous forests (although not detectable in the atlas data). In the lowlands, urban areas (especially when nestboxes are well available), the inner dunes and semi-open farmland are densely populated. Since the 1970s, the species expanded its range in reclaimed areas like Zuidelijk Flevoland, and showed an upward trend elsewhere, benefiting e.g. from the maturation of forests. Population size is difficult to assess, but comprises probably 275,000-325,000 bp in 1998-2000.
