Indeling

Alaudidae [familie]
Alauda [genus] (1/1)
arvensis [soort]

Once one of the most abundant breeding birds, but nowadays only numerous in open arable land and, more locally, open heaths. In grassland and coastal dunes a 70-90% reduction in numbers since the late 1970s was reported, mainly as a result of intensified farmland use and changes in vegetation (coastal dunes). Populations in arable land are threatened by changes in crops (green maize) and ongoing urbanisation. Despite an only modest range contraction (-7%), overall population numbers fell from 500,000-750,000 bp in 1973-77 to 50,000-70,000 in 1998-2000.
