Indeling

Strigidae [familie]
Asio [genus] (2/2)
flammeus [soort]

Almost restricted to the Wadden Sea islands, especially Texel, Terschelling and Ameland. Only accidentally elsewhere (annually at Schiphol Airport!). On the mainland, where a long-term decline was temporarily interrupted by an influx in newly reclaimed polders (until the early 1980s), the species had almost vanished by 1990 as habitats had disappeared and peak abundance of vole numbers decreased. The population on the Wadden Sea islands experienced a steep decline in the 1990s, probably caused by changes in vegetation (and therefore vole numbers) and perhaps disturbance from tourists. Only 35-45 bp in 1998-2000 (100-200 in the 1970s and 1980s).
