Highest densities are recorden in open wet grasslands on peat soils, often nature reserves, in the northwest and west of the country. Numbers fell dramatically from the 1960s onwards, coinciding with intensification of agriculture and drought in the Sahel. It resulted in the disappearance in almost 400 atlas squares since 1973-77. Local increases are often linked to renaturation projects, although numbers involved are generally low. The current population is estimated at 1600-1900 bp.
