Coenonympha hero used to be a resident. It has been extinct here since 1959. It occurred in the east of the country, and in the south of the province of Limburg. Several species of grass served as larval foodplant; Hordelymus europaeus, known as its larval foodplant elsewhere, does not occur in the Netherlands. The species flew in one generation in June and hibernated as a half-grown caterpillar. Little is known about its ecological requirements or the former habitat.
