Melitaea diamina used to be a resident; it has been extinct since 1960, but the cause for its disappearance is unknown. As it is a particularly stationary species, it is not expected to establish itself here again. Species of Valeriana were used as larval foodplant. It flew in one generation from mid-May until mid-July, and hibernated gregariously in nests as a half-grown caterpillar.
