Indeling

Papilioninae [subfamilie]
Papilio [genus] (1/1)
machaon [soort]

Papilio machaon is a fairly scarce resident, with permanent populations only in the southern part of the province of Limburg. During the 20th century, its occurrence fluctuated considerably; it was virtually absent in the 1920s, abundant in the 1930s and 1940s, and again rare in the 1960s. According to the Dutch Monitoring Scheme, its numbers have been increasing moderately since 1990. It is thus classified as 'of least concern' on the 2006 Red List, whereas it was considered 'susceptible' on that of 1995. It is mostly found on rough, herb-rich grassland, ruderal vegetation, and sometimes in vegetable gardens. Various Apiaceae species serve as larval foodplant, in particular Daucus carota, both the wild species and cultivars, but also Angelica sylvestris and Foeniculum vulgare. The species flies in two generations and hibernates as a pupa.
