Maculinea arion is a former resident; it has been extinct since 1949. The species flew in one generation from early July until mid-August and hibernated as a half-grown caterpillar in ant nests, probably of Myrmica sabuleti. As larval foodplant, it used Thymus pulegioides on calcareous soils, and T. serpyllum on sandy soils.
