Indeling

Hesperiinae [subfamilie]
Thymelicus [genus] (3/3)
sylvestris [soort]

At present, Thymelicus sylvestris is quite a scarce resident. Since 1900, it has been declining steadily and the number of locations has fallen by half. The distribution map probably gives too optimistic a picture, due to confusion with T. lineola, and possibly even with Ochlodes faunus. The species seems to be withdrawing towards the eastern border of the country. The data of the Dutch Monitoring Scheme indicate a moderate decline since 1990; the reasons for this are unclear. It occurs on rough, sheltered grasslands on both dry and wet soils. Several broad-leaved grasses serve as larval foodplant. It flies in one generation from the end of June until mid-August and hibernates as a caterpillar. Extensive grazing or rotational mowing of roadside verges, rough grasslands and woodland edges are recommended.
