Platycnemis pennipes in The Netherlands is restricted to the higher regions where it is common in suitable habitat. There are distinct focal areas within its range (north, east and south). It prefers running waters, such as streams, canals and small rivers, but may also be found on clear, well-oxygenated standing water bodies like gravel pits and fishponds. The species probably suffered from water pollution in the 1970s, but its overall range appears to have remained stable. It is expected to increase now the water quality has been improved.
