Sympetrum danae is common in The Netherlands. It is mainly present on the Pleistocene soils. Populations in the coastal dunes are always small and temporary. Records elsewhere generally involve wanderers. The species favours acidic lakes and raised bogs and is most abundant in places with a muddy bottom and shallow water. The species has benefited by eutrophication and acidification, becoming very abundant in disturbed heath lakes.
