Crocothemis erythraea is rare in The Netherlands, but has shown a marked increase in recent years. Before 1993 only three individuals had been recorded (1959, 1967 and 1968), but in that year a population was discovered in the extreme south-western corner of the country. In 1995 the species also appeared in the extreme south-east. Since then, C. erythraea has shown a steady expansion in both areas. At present, there are several populations, and the species seems to be expanding. Vagrants have also been seen well beyond the known localities, though mostly in the south. The preferred habitat consists of sunny, sheltered pools or lakes with dense aquatic vegetation.
