Leucorrhinia caudalis was probably always rare in The Netherlands and it has been extinct since 1970. In the first half of the 20th century several stable populations were known in mesotrophic pools, mostly in a forested setting. Because the species requires a well-structured aquatic and riparian vegetation, drought and eutrophication are likely causes for its demise. Because of its alarming status throughout Western Europe it seems doubtful that L. caudalis will be rediscovered in The Netherlands in the foreseeable future.
Update
In 2006 L. caudalis was rediscovered in The Netherlands. Since then the species has established itself in two adjoining nature reserves in the eastern part of The Netherlands.
