Sympecma fusca is a fairly rare species in The Netherlands. After a decline through most of the twentieth century, it has demonstrated a dramatic expansion during the last decade. Being restricted to the south-eastern corner of the country in the 1980s, it is now found more widely than ever before. The species mostly inhabits well-vegetated standing waters, such as mesotrophic pools and reedy dune glades. The cause of its ‘fall and rise’ is not precisely known. The deteriorating quality of its habitat may have induced its downfall, whilst its increase may have been encouraged by rising temperatures. Although classified as endangered in the Red List, S. fusca now seems to be no longer threatened.
