Indeling

Gomphidae [familie]
Stylurus [genus] (1/1)
flavipes [soort]

Gomphus flavipes was known from seven scattered records prior to 1902, and was thereafter thought to be extinct. In 1996, a larva was found at Nijmegen. From 1998 onwards, a rapid colonisation of the rivers Waal, Rijn and IJssel took place. In 2000 it was first found along the river Maas, also on the Belgian side, in which country it had not previously been recorded. The larvae inhabit large rivers, where their presence is mainly evidenced by exuviae found on the sandy beaches. The reasons for the species’ extinction and return remain unclear.
