Somatochlora metallica is not uncommon in The Netherlands, and the species appears to be stable. Although widespread in the inland Pleistocene region, numbers are low, seldom exceeding three males per site. The species inhabits small lakes, canals and streams with often steep, wooded banks. It also scarcely occurs on mesotrophic pools and in fenland.
