Somatochlora flavomaculata is rare in The Netherlands and has shown a strong decline during the 20th century. It is now regarded to be critically endangered. In the 1990s only a single population was known in mesotrophic marshes in the extreme south-east of the country. Very recently the species was also found to be present in fenlands in the border region of the provinces of Overijssel and Friesland (not shown on map). The habitat has a high water quality, well-developed aquatic and riparian vegetation and a landscape constituting a mosaic of patches of forest and wetland.
