Erythromma najas is very common and widely distributed in The Netherlands. Its absence from large parts of the provinces of Zeeland and Noord-Holland may be explained by the higher salinity of waters there. The species is found in most types of stagnant or slow-moving water with at least some floating vegetation, particularly water lilies. The species is especially abundant in fenlands. It is tolerant to eutrophication, but not to acidification as this affects its favoured vegetation.
