Ischnura elegans is extremely common in The Netherlands and can probably be found in every 5x5 km square with land. It is found in all kinds of habitats but prefers standing waters with some riparian vegetation. The species is largely absent from oligotrophic habitats and seems to have profited strongly from eutrophication of formerly oligo- or mesotrophic habitats. The species is probably more numerous now than it was a century ago.
