Gryllotalpa [genus] (1/1)

The Mole-cricket has always been most common in the western part of this country, but used to occur in the area ‘De Peel’ and southern Limburg as well. During the project it appeared still to be widespread in the western part of The Netherlands, and was also found in Friesland, but it could not be refound in many inland localities. This may be partly an artefact due to the method of data-recording. Most information was obtained by placing advertisements in local newspapers in agricultural areas, particularly in the western part of the country. Its biotopes are meadows, gardens, bulb-fields on peat or sandy soils. In clay-areas it is only found on places where the soil was disturbed or mixed with sand. The species is often regarded as a pest by farmers and gardeners, and, maybe partly caused by control measures, overall numbers seem to have declined. Its rather common occurrence in our country is in strong contrast with the decline in several other European countries. Since the species favours human-influenced biotopes, it is difficult to suggest measurements for protection.
