The Lesser Mottled Grasshopper is rather common in the pleistocene part of our country, north of the river Rhine. Southward the species is extremely scarce. Its relative common occurrence is at variance with its rareness and decline in most surrounding countries. It inhabits grassy patches in heathland, poor dry grassland and limestone grassland. The species profits clearly from the use of sheep in modern nature management, and can reach high densities in grazed heathland. In general it is not declining, may be even increasing in numbers, but most colonies in limestone grasslands in Limburg have disappeared.
