The Stripe-winged Grasshopper is a rare species, which is only common in the Veluwe-area. Its other colonies are extremely isolated and count few individuals only. It inhabits dry heathland and dry grassland, both on siliceous and calcareous soil. In heathland it prefers grassy places, and can stand the overgrowing with grasses, due to acidification, relatively well. In the Veluwe S. lineatus is not declining, but on the limestone grasslands of Limburg most populations have disappeared, as have the tiny populations in Drenthe and Noord-Brabant.
