The Rattle Grasshopper is extinct in The Netherlands since 1942. It used to have a few colonies on the southern border of the Veluwe, where it occurred in open heathland. Little detail is known about its former habitat. The decline of P. stridulus is paralleled in the northern half of Germany and Belgium, where the species also disappeared. The reasons for the decline, habitat fragmentation and deterioration, are probably the same as for Gampsocleis glabra and Decticus verrucivorus.
