The Large Gold Grasshopper is a local species, with most colonies concentrated in central Limburg and the northwest of Overijssel and a large, but isolated colony in the former peat moor Wooldse Veen, near Winterswijk. Other colonies are small and isolated. It inhabits moist habitats, such as fen area, former peat-moor, wet heath and open poplar forest. Only one population lives in a relatively dry grassland. Common to all localities is the rather tall vegetation of sedges, grasses, rushes or heather, because the species uses broken stems for oviposition. Although the species seems to be stable, a decline might be assumed because of the decline and deterioration of its habitat. The macropterous form is extremely rare: only 3 females have been found.
